2015: The Paris Agreement, signed in December 2015, was ratified in 2021 by 194 states as well as the European Union.

2019: The Union presents the Green Deal for Europe, also known as the Green Deal.
It aims to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050 with a reduction in emissions of these gases by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and a net greenhouse gas emission rate of 0% by 2050.

2021 : The negotiators of the EU Member States and the European Parliament agree on the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023-2027. It provides in particular that from 2025, aid called «ecoregions» («eco-schemes» in English) will be paid to farmers on the basis of compliance with demanding environmental practices. These premiums will cover 25% of direct aid under the first pillar of the new CAP.

2021: The European Commission presents the «FitFor55» package. It consists of 13 legal measures (directives and regulations), aimed at achieving by 2030 the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990. These include «the implementation of a carbon tax at the borders of the European Union, the strengthening of the European carbon market or the end of the sale of thermal cars by 2035». LIFE Carbon Farming is part of the strengthening of the European carbon market: establishing a common framework for implementing low-carbon initiatives in agriculture; implementing low-carbon projects on 700 European farms; developing low-carbon project cost benchmarks; by developing a results-based carbon reduction financing mechanism; by building a European low-carbon livestock network; and finally by developing a common framework for a European low-carbon agriculture strategy.
